Do you ever feel nervous visiting the dentist, doctor, or other medical specialist? It’s perfectly natural to feel anxiety before an appointment, and approximately 36% of Americans admit to having some fear of dental treatment. That nervousness can be amplified if you’re considering an invasive procedure, like replacing missing teeth. Traditional methods of tooth replacement used to be somewhat frightening—dental bridges require us to shave enamel off of your teeth in preparation, while conventional dental implants require incisions to place the implant and stitches to help the wound heal. However, a new dental innovation is making that invasiveness a thing of the past. Non-surgical dental implants can be placed without invasive techniques, making tooth replacement a much less worrying prospect for many patients.
Understanding Dental Implants
The dental implants we use to help replace missing teeth are titanium screws that we place directly into your jawbone to support restorations like crowns, bridges, and dentures. They provide several benefits over using older, more traditional forms of tooth replacement.
- Natural look and feel: Dental implants more closely give you the feel, look, and functionality of natural teeth. Once in place, they are virtually indistinguishable from your original teeth.
- Improved oral health: Unlike other dental restorations, implants help prevent bone and tissue loss in the jaw. The implant stimulates bone growth, which is important for maintaining oral health and facial structure. It also prevents your remaining teeth from shifting into the empty space.
- Enhanced comfort: Because they connect directly to your jawbone, implants relieve the discomfort and irritation of removable dentures, which can slip or cause sores due to poor fit.
- Better functionality: Teeth secured by implants function more like your natural teeth. Implants allow you to eat your favorite foods again and enjoy a more nutritious diet. They also help improve your speech by fixing gaps in your teeth and eliminating the worry of them slipping.
- Greater confidence: Dental implants restore your smile and help you feel better about your appearance. They also eliminate the worry that traditional dentures will unexpectedly move around in your mouth. With a new, secure set of teeth, you’ll feel much more confident in social situations of all types.
Despite all these benefits, traditional dental implants can still be a scary proposition since they require a minor surgical procedure, multiple follow-up appointments, and a lengthy healing time. On the other hand, non-surgical dental implants provide all the benefits of larger implants in a much smaller, less invasive package.
The Advantages of Non-Surgical Dental Implants
To place traditional dental implants, we have to make a surgical incision in the gums, opening them enough to place the 5 mm thick implant. If there’s not sufficient jawbone to work with, we may have to perform a bone graft, adding months of healing to the process. Once we place the implant, it requires 3-6 months to fuse with the jawbone before the final restoration is attached.
Non-surgical dental implants have a much different process. More commonly called mini dental implants, the biggest difference you’ll notice is their size. Mini dental implants are less than 3 mm thick, about the size of a toothpick. This means we can place them with only a tiny pilot hole, a minimally invasive and comfortable process that’s completed in minutes. After the procedure, we can attach new teeth immediately, and the entire healing process is shortened from 3-6 months to a few weeks. When you combine their ease of placement, faster healing time, and fewer appointments required, non-surgical dental implants are half the cost of traditional implants.
All of these advantages make non-surgical mini dental implants the preferred choice for tooth replacement.
