What Is Periodontal Disease?
Watch this video by Dr. Bruce Fine, an experienced New Jersey implant dentist, as he explains the causes and treatments for periodontal disease.
I understand you might have questions about periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. Essentially, gum disease is a bacterial infection that silently affects our gums, erodes the bone structure beneath, and compromises the support for our teeth. It’s worth noting that while this infection progressively damages the gums and bone, the visible signs might not always be apparent, and your gums may still appear relatively normal. However, underneath the gumline, the bacterial infection is actively causing harm. To illustrate the relationship between our gums and teeth, consider the analogy of the groove between our fingernail and finger. In a state of oral health, this groove should ideally be just one, two, or 3 millimeters deep.
However, if you’re experiencing gum disease, this groove becomes significantly deeper, indicating a problem that needs addressing. Fortunately, there are effective solutions available to combat gum disease and ways to educate you on prevention to ensure it doesn’t recur. The primary focus is on maintaining excellent oral hygiene to keep harmful bacteria away from your teeth, eliminating the existing infection, and facilitating the regeneration of any lost bone. I look forward to discussing this further with you during a consultation. Feel free to reach out to us for more information. Have a wonderful day, and I’m eager to meet with you to address your concerns.
